Mamdouh Bahri Projects

A trip to the Mediterranean Afro Jazz Music via New York

While standing at cultural crossroads, Mamdouh Bahri has chosen jazz as his lift off point to create new musical worlds. Although he is carrying on the tradition of jazz guitar — from Wes Montgomery to the present day — he has expanded some musical boundaries, combining Afro-Mediterranean music with the jazz tradition. He thus stands as a go-between connecting Africa and America. His savvy original compositions catch listeners, generating a symbiotic affinity between the artist and the audience through groove and jam-oriented music.
Mamdouh Bahri’s alchemy blends jazz, blues and rock into an exciting new music with African, Mediterranean and Latin undertones...
Mamdouh Bahri brings together talented musicians, in various formats (trio, quartet, quintet), to give shape to an intertwined recollection of various strands of jazz and blues. But there is also a current, flowing just below the surface, harking back to the masters of the oud, that eastern lute whose crystalline colors suffuse all Arabic music, and an expression reminiscent of the legacy of the great Arabic voices...

MAMDOUH BAHRI QUINTET

TABARKA PROJECT

When Mamdouh and his musicians hit the stage they’re inviting us to a musical journey. A talented guitarist, Mamdouh Bahri creates a true fusion between jazz and music from the Mediterranean, lightly underscored by Middle-Eastern touches. The double-horn frontline sets off the melodic richness of Mamdouh Bahri’s music while the guitar weaves a heady tapestry as a counterpoint. Those fresh musical colors are beefed up by a crafty rhythm section. As you can guess, the Jazz Messengers, Cannonball Adderley’s quintet and Horace Silver’s various bands are never far away… They are the inspiration for young musicians who bring their experiences together under Mamdouh Bahri’s tutelage, the leader serving as a guide and creator whose musical world is one of emotion.

MAMDOUH BAHRI QUARTET

MARINA PROJECT

Mamdouh Bahri presents his Marina project in the company of the most talented musicians of the French jazz scene. The warmth and bounce of his music are instantly convincing to anyone who hears it. His music is that of a journeyman— he will take you on a journey around and across the Mediterranean, not to mention a few stopovers in New York!
The beauty that comes from the delicate interplay between guitar and piano generates a world of harmonic beauty. The classical quartet in the wake of Wes Montgomery has been spiced up by Mamdouh Bahri’s personal life journey across the world. That is why this band uses experienced musicians, able to share their mastery of music and interact with each other.

NEFTA PROJECT

NEFTA is a town from Southern Tunisia. This project was originated by Mamdouh Bahri in April 1989 to perform original tunes, at the cross-road of blues and Middle-Eastern melodies, using jazz changes and North African rhythms. Among Mamdouh Bahri’s bands, this quartet is inspired by the manifold language of rhythm. It celebrates the universal love for dancing that music from Africa, South America and the Mediterranean have put forward through the extensive use of percussions. With Nefta, Mamdouh Bahri gives free rein to the sheer joy of a pulsing beat.

MAMDOUH BAHRI TRIO

ZINKOLA PROJECT

A reflection of his many influences, this trio has been put together by Mamdouh Bahri to take you on a sensual trip to the countries of North Africa, all around the Mediterranean, with a few stopovers in West Africa… Trios are always about a risk-taking experience, full of dialogue and partnership. The freedom it allows takes many surprising turns, following Mamdouh Bahri’s eclectic musical culture, a synthesis of Afro-Mediterranean and African-American colors. The musicians he has assembled here give a new meaning to the concept of togetherness with spontaneous curiosity and a real dedication to make something happen.
